New President Takes the Reins

Commencement Speaker Announced

National Intelligence University President Dr. David Ellison today announced that Michael Hayden, former Director of the National Security Agency, Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency will deliver the commencement address to National Intelligence University (NIU) graduates, Friday, July 28.

Hayden, a retired 4-star Air Force general, is a 1980 alumnus of the university who was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2001. He currently serves as a principal with the Chertoff Group and is Chairman of the National Intelligence University Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. A noted speaker and lecturer on national security topics, Hayden is the author of the 2016 book “Playing to the Edge: American Intelligence in the Age of Terror.”

Incoming NIU President Discusses Academic and Leadership Philosophy

Dr. J. Scott Cameron, recently selected to become the National Intelligence University’s new President, outlined his leadership and academic philosophies in a town hall meeting with NIU faculty and staff June 4 at the NIU campus in Bethesda, Md.

Dr. Cameron brings extensive national security, intelligence and higher education experience to his new role as National Intelligence University president. He currently serves as the Director of the Office of Weapons of Mass Destruction/ Counterterrorism at the National Counterterrorism Center, having entered federal government service after serving 14 years in higher education in faculty and academic leadership roles at Washington State University.

Dr. J. Scott Cameron has been named the next president of National Intelligence University (NIU). He will assume his post at the start of the new academic year in August 2017. He succeeds Dr. David Ellison who is retiring after serving as NIU president since 2009.

“Dr. Cameron is uniquely qualified to lead NIU as the university achieves its vision to become the center of academic life for the intelligence community (IC),” said DIA Director Lieutenant General Vincent Stewart, the selecting official, in announcing the appointment.

NIU Faculty Member Receives “Best Article of the Year Award” from Intelligence and National Security Journal

NIU faculty member Joe Caddell was awarded the 2016 “Christopher Andrew – Michael Handel Prize” for best article of the year in the journal “Intelligence and National Security.” Caddell was presented the award during the Feb 22-25 International Studies Association conference in Baltimore, Maryland by the journal’s co-editors Loch Johnson, Ph.D. from the University of Georgia and Mark Phythian Ph.D. University of Leicester.

NIU Begins Historic Move from DC to Bethesda

NIU is relocating to a new facility on the Intelligence Community Campus in Bethesda, Maryland (ICC-B). The phased move of the NIU main campus out of the District of Columbia to Bethesda began in December and will be completed in late February.

Ms. Caracristi began her career as a code breaker in WWII and rose through the ranks to become one of the highest ranking members of the U.S. intelligence community by serving as Deputy Director of the National Security Agency.
